Making Change Actually Stick
If you keep saying, “We already talked about this,” your team may not need another reminder.
We solve problems in meetings all the time. Everyone agrees on what needs to change, we leave feeling like we made progress, and then a few weeks later the old behavior is back. It is easy to assume the team is not listening or does not care, but often the real problem is simpler: we talked about the change without creating a process to make sure it actually sticks.
Getting agreement is only the beginning. Here’s what needs to happen next:
-
Discuss
Get the team involved, make sure everyone understands why the change matters, and let them help create the solution. -
Decide
Do not leave the conversation open-ended. Agree on exactly what you are going to do. -
Try
You do not need the perfect system. Pick a solution, get everyone doing it the same way, and give it a chance to work. -
Revisit
Decide when you are going to check back in. Without follow-up, even good systems eventually drift back to the old way.
You do not need to keep having the same conversations. You need a better way to protect the progress you've already made. If you are tired of solving the same problems over and over again, the conversation below may help you see what has been missing.
P.S. Sometimes the fastest way to make real progress is to step out of the day-to-day and work on the bigger picture. Our DPH Retreat is coming up quickly this October, and we’ll be focused on the leadership and systems that help your practice move forward. Space is limited, so grab your spot now.
