Building One Team
The biggest communication problem is usually a perspective problem.
The front office and the clinical team are working toward the same goal, but they experience the day very differently. One side lives in a world of constant interruptions. The other is focused on keeping patients moving and providing great clinical care.
When we only see our own pressures, it becomes easy to assume the other team just "doesn't get it." That's where frustration begins.
If you want to build one team instead of two departments, focus on these three ideas:
- Assume positive intent.
Most frustrations are not caused by people trying to make someone else's job harder. They are usually caused by people who simply do not understand the pressure on the other side. - Create opportunities to build empathy.
Cross-training, shadowing, and open conversations help people appreciate challenges they never see during a normal day. - Fix the communication, not the people.
Most conflict is really a systems problem. Better handoffs, clearer expectations, and open conversations solve far more than blame ever will.
The strongest practices are not the ones that avoid disagreements. They are the ones that give people the tools to work through them together. When your team understands each other's perspective, trust grows, communication improves, and the entire practice runs better.
If you've ever felt like your front and back teams were speaking different languages, I think you'll get a lot out of this conversation:
P.S. The same communication gaps that create tension between the front and back can also create missed production opportunities. Missed calls, weak follow-up, poor handoffs, and unclear ownership keep practices from serving more patients and reaching their full potential.
