Stop Saving Your Life for Later
You can save more money later. You cannot save more of this season of your life.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that freedom is something you earn later. Work hard now, save aggressively, take the bigger trips later, cut back clinically later, and enjoy the money later. The problem is that “later” has a habit of moving.
Instead of waiting for some future retirement number to give yourself permission to live differently, start designing more freedom into your life now.
- Put a number on enough
Figure out what you actually need to save each year to stay on track for your long-term goals. Once you hit that number, let yourself be done. Without an endpoint, every extra dollar feels like it should be saved. - Buy back time before you buy more stuff
Use some of your excess income to remove things you do not want to do. Hire help at home, pay for convenience, take another week off, or make life easier in ways that give you time back. - Reduce your dependence on clinical income
Build the practice so your income is less connected to the number of days you personally produce. Develop leaders, improve systems, grow associates, and start creating more room in your schedule.
Then ask yourself this: If I knew I was going to keep earning money for another 20 or 30 years, what would I stop postponing?
Maybe it is a trip. Maybe it is Fridays off. Maybe it is dropping from four clinical days to three. You do not have to abandon your financial plan or stop saving for the future. Just make sure you are not so focused on creating a great life someday that you forget to create one now.
P.S. If the life you want requires spending fewer days in the chair, taking more time off, or having a practice that depends less on you, that is exactly what we help owners build at DPH. Book a strategy call, and we can look at what would need to change in your practice to make that possible.
