Why Execution Matters More Than Systems

Most practices fall into one of two traps. Either there are no real systems and everything runs on memory and urgency, or the systems look great on paper but nobody follows them. Different approaches, same outcome. Practice chaos. The mistake is thinking systems create accountability. They do not, but conversations do. When accountability shows up weeks late and only after frustration builds, the team feels blindsided, the owner feels resentful, and nothing changes.

Use my CVI script to keep you out of the two extremes most owners fall into, ignoring it until you explode or correcting with anxiety. CVI turns accountability into a quick alignment check anytime something does not get done.

  • Curiosity
“I noticed this didn’t get done. Help me understand what got in the way.”

  • Validation
“That makes sense. I can see how that happened.”

  • Invitation
“What do you think we should adjust so this works consistently?”

A few reminders as you use it:

  • Same day beats someday. Delayed accountability normalizes the behavior.

  • Keep it short. These should be thirty second alignment checks, not sit down talks.

  • Separate the person from the pattern. This is not about you. It is about the process.

If you want to hear how to use this in real situations inside your practice, listen to the latest episode. I go deep on why accountability fails and how to fix it without anxiety or drama.

Wishing you a strong start to the new year and continued progress in your practice!

Bigger teams and more moving parts create more uncomfortable staff situations, strange patient questions, and conflict you did not see coming. None of it means you are failing, but if you are not ready for it, it can ...
The Problem Is Not Change, It Is Execution
One of the most frustrating parts of ownership is the tension between progress and overwhelm. If you do not change anything, nothing improves. If you change too much, your team gets overwhelmed. Most owners assume their team resists change itself, but that is rarely true. Teams burn out when change is left unfinished. Ideas get rolled out halfway, expectations shift without clarity, and new ini...
The Financial Blind Spot in Most Practices
Most dentists believe two things are true. If something bad happens, insurance will handle it. If they have a will somewhere, their family will be fine. Neither of those assumptions holds up very well in the real world. In this week’s episode, I sat down with Gary Harker. He works in asset protection and tax strategy, and our conversation hit a nerve for me because it exposed how many high earn...
