The Real Reason Your Team Leaves (and How to Stop It)
One of the biggest hidden costs in dentistry is turnover. It’s not just the recruiting ads or the hours training new hires. It’s the drag it puts on your culture, your patient experience, and your existing team’s morale.
From working with my own team, I’ve learned that people usually don’t leave because of pay. They leave because of three things:
-
Lack of recognition. They don’t feel valued for what they bring.
-
Lack of communication. Issues never get talked about, resentment builds, and gossip fills the gap.
-
Lack of growth. If people don’t feel they’re developing, they’ll look for a place where they can.
A simple fix? Start scheduling consistent one-on-ones with your team. These short conversations build psychological safety, give employees autonomy, and show that you care about their growth. It’s the single most powerful tool I’ve used to reduce turnover.
In this week’s Dental Practice Heroes episode, I go deeper into how you can drastically reduce turnover in your practice without overcomplicating it.
