The Real Reason You’re Not Growing Past $2M

If you’re like most practice owners, you’ll hit that first big milestone at $1 million in collections and feel pretty good. You’ve got two hygienists, two assistants, a solid front team, and steady growth. But then, the momentum stalls.

You find yourself producing more but not really growing. The systems are patchy. You’re making every decision. You’re exhausted but can’t step away because everything still depends on you.

That’s the $1 to $2 million plateau, and most practices live there for decades.

The truth is, getting past it has nothing to do with squeezing in more patients or producing more dentistry. It’s about transforming how you lead. You have to make three key shifts:

  1. From Dentist to Owner. Stop producing your way to growth and start running your business.

  2. From Lone Leader to Leadership Team. Build a small team that can shield you from daily fires so you can focus on growth.

  3. From Reactive to Systematic. Stop solving problems on the fly and start documenting how things should be done.

Once you make these shifts, growth feels effortless and the practice finally runs without you.

But there’s one mindset change most owners overlook, and it’s the real reason they stay stuck no matter how hard they work. I explain what it is in this week’s episode of the Dental Practice Heroes Podcast.

The Truth About Growth No One Wants to Hear
Every bit of growth, whether in the gym or your practice, happens in the hard reps. The ones that hurt. The ones you do not want to do. I used to think I just needed to work harder to grow, but what I learned from my trainer changed everything. All the early reps just tire the muscle out. The growth comes from the last two reps, the ones you have to push through when you are uncomfortable. Prac...

If the practice feels like a messy room and you do not know where to start, here is the first pass with a trash bag and a plan. Why Your Associate Isn’t Solving Your Problems
Every dentist dreams of the day they can hire an associate and finally get their time back. Someone else handles the dentistry while you focus on the business or maybe even take a few Fridays off. But for most owners, it doesn’t go that way. They add an associate, and profits actually dip. The reason is simple. If your systems are leaky, adding more doctors just multiplies the problems that alr...
