The Success Trap: When Growth Starts to Cost You Peace
If ownership has started to feel heavy, you are not alone.
I’ve been there myself.
This week, my friend Dr. Richard Lowe shares a story that really hit home for me.
He went from leading 35 offices to stepping back to save his marriage, his mental health, and ultimately, himself.
The pressure, the loneliness, the feeling of being stuck. We talk about all of it.
Here is a quick playbook from the episode you can use today:
1) Name the trap
Write it down: “I feel trapped because ___.”
Putting it on paper brings clarity and shows what’s really causing the stress.
2) End isolation
Reach out to two dentists who get it.
Message them: “I’m carrying a lot right now. Can we talk this week?”
You’ll feel lighter the moment you hit send.
3) Expand your options
List every real option, even ones you’d never pick.
Sell, merge, cut back days, hire leadership, get coaching, or pause new projects.
Choice creates control.
4) Make one boundary visible
Set one clear guardrail this week.
No work apps after 7 pm.
One meeting-free morning.
Close the schedule when it’s full.
Protect your time.
5) Start a micro reset
Choose one small health habit.
Walk after lunch.
Drink water before coffee.
Take two deep breaths before the first patient.
Small steps build momentum.
If this hits home, the full episode dives deeper into how to break burnout, rebuild your health, and rediscover purpose in both life and practice.
